Three-hundred and fifty-eight years in the future, mankind reached a plateau.  Resources were strained, technology had stagnated and the standard of living had regressed to barely out of the industrial revolution.  Space exploration had been halted centuries ago, being deemed a "foolish waste of time," leaving man trapped on a sickly, rotting world.  The world's nations, once fueled with a desire for progress, now struggled to keep it's population alive.  The human race had fallen far indeed.

But fourty-five years ago, a new hope!  The pitifully-tiny scientific community had succeeded in "digging" a crude tunnel in space, creating a connection to a new world full of precious resources, unpolluted air and millions of acres of tillable farmland just waiting for the plow.  Five expeditions spread out in opposite directions showed that there were no other sentient life-forms on the planet.  It was all for the taking!  But more importantly, this world held something unexpected.  Something new, and yet old.  It was an energy source, unmeasurable and seemingly without end, but capable of altering the slightest bit of terran matter and...changing it.  It was baffling, intoxicating, but very very real.  Some said this new world was too good to be true.

And they were right. Within only a few weeks of the first expedition in the new world, a darkness arose. They came from nowhere. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of entities wearing darkness like a second skin appeared and cut through the human fortifications like they were so much dust. A few tried to fight, but it was no use. Walls and armor were no defense, and the focused energy-based weapons that had replaced projectile firearms only slowed the beasts. Three of the five expedition teams went dark before anyone realized something was wrong, and by then it was too late for the rest. A single distress call was recieved on earth, garbled and screaming for rescue for over three minutes before abruptly cutting out. Only the light guard that had remained at the tunnel's entrance escaped.
