The original creation of Research at the Agency, STUD's are Strategic and Tactical Utility Devices issued to all members of the Agency upon their official induction into the organization. Essentially a bio-mechanical computer, STUD's function as miniature computers, satellite phones, and field-based analytical tools that all connect to the Agency's central server in the corporate headquarters. Depending on the user's clearance, all STUD's have the capacity for limitless upgrades and varying access to different levels of corporate information.

Each device is encoded to its users DNA and can also serve as personal medial monitoring devices when within four feet of the owner. When the device is genetically attuned to its user, it undergoes a random design configuration that is generated from the user's unique genetic code, as well as giving personality to a limited-capability "AI" which functions as the STUD's operating system. Through constant interaction between the user and the AI, the STUD's personality can "grow" and become more attuned to the user's basic needs.

STUD's come in several types and designs depending on the user's role in the Agency, but generally they break down into six varieties: Research, Combat, Field, Corporate, Medical, and Tracking.

Research-Type STUD's are issued to Agency members dealing in technological development and investigation. These STUD's tend to have the largest internal memory capacity and processing power (next to Field and Tracking types) and are compatible with virtually all levels of Agency technology.

Combat-Type STUD's are issued to Agency members specializing in military-based activity, whether stationed as guards within headquarters or as part of TR teams. Combat-Type STUD's have the ability to negate the sensation of pain while increasing adrenal release. These STUD's also have the ability to share the memory and sensory capabilities of other STUD's, making them the best STUD types for intense combat situations.

Field-Type STUD's are issued to those Agency members who tend to operate alone or in very small groups, usually on special assignments vital to various aspects of the Agency. Since field agents can encounter virtually anything imaginable, these STUD types have the capabilities and components of all other types and are only issued in restricted quantities. However as STUD's that are "jacks of all trades," each aspect of every other type functions at half-capacity of the original, making them difficult to use properly.

Corporate-Type STUD's are those issued to the executive members of the Agency. Though not individually powerful or specialized (in fact they are the "weakest" STUD type manufactured by the Agency), these STUD's have the ability to access and "take over" any other STUD and use its abilities as the executive sees fit (with the limited exception of Medical Types in certain situations). When encountering other Corporate STUD's, the person holding the highest "rank" within the Agency has the control.

Medical-Type STUD's are issued to the medical staff members of the Agency. These STUD's deal strictly with the handling of health-related issues of Agency members, and are constantly connected to all other STUD's monitoring the physical status of their users. These STUD's also have the unique ability to synthesize and administer virtually any known type of drug, provided the basic organic components are available. All Medical-Type STUD's can restrict and/or suspend the abilities of all other STUD's if the medical agent believes the opposing user's health is in danger, with the exception of other Medical-Types. In that circumstance, it takes two or more Medical-Types to restrict the activities of another Medical-Type.

Tracking-Type STUD's are issued to those agents such as Watchers whose job it is to find and track potential recruits for the Agency (or else locate and "take care" of any agents that may "go rogue" and leave the Agency without discharge). These STUD's are very powerful, in that they have the ability to "mask" or "hide" the user from most psionic, magical, and electronic devices, including other STUD's (with the exception of other Tracking-Types). These STUD types can also "track" targets to within a one-mile range of accuracy if supplied with a DNA sample. They also have the ability to completely synchronize with the user, amplifying his or her unique abilities to nearly double their strength. However Tracking-Type STUD's use the life force of their user in order to activate their abilities, making them extremely dangerous.
